In a slam at CNN, Republican Lyin’ Ted Cruz tweeted the “fact” that Senators are not jurors, and referenced a quote from Democrat Senator Tom Harkin who had first raised this issue during the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
Trouble is, Cruz left out Harkin’s main point: that the senate is not “just” a jury, it is a court with the duty to ask “…have the actions of the president caused injury to our country?
“Sitting as a court of judges, the Senate can take into account the surrounding issues and presidential actions that gave rise to the facts presented by the House.
“Then the Senate must decide whether these issues and actions have done serious harm to the public — whether they set a dangerous precedent for the future of our government sufficient to warrant his removal from office.”
Cruz did not play this well. Clearly, Trump’s actions since the election “set a dangerous precedent for the future of our government…” By Harkin’s standard, the Senate must vote for impeachment.
But of course, Cruz is trying to take Trump’s place as head of the radical right, so he’ll say something else tomorrow, or deny that he meant anything at all by the words that he said.
